Seaweed · A Nanoplay in One Act by Nancy Edelman
The characters:
ANJALI, a single mother in her mid-30s
LIZA, her eight-year-old daughter
(The scene: The eastern shoreline of Miami Beach, between 14th and 15th Street, in the heart of the Art Deco district. As the curtain opens, we find Anjali standing near the water's edge where small waves lap the shore. It's an impossibly sunny day in late winter. Anjali is looking out over the ocean, lost in thought. Occasionally, she wears the expression of one struggling to remember the lyrics of a popular song. Liza has just come running out of the water. She's very agitated and is pointing to something in the waves. Her tone alternates between panic and glee.)
LIZA:
(Shouting.) Seaweed! Seaweed! Seaweed! It's SEEEA-WEED! (Pause.)
ANJALI:
Shut up. (The scene is suddenly calm again as both mother and daughter look out over
the ocean.)
(Curtain.)
