Einstein on the Beach Towel
A Nanoplay in One Act
by Nancy Edelman
The characters:
MINNAH, a Jewish woman in her late 60s, now retired
SAMUEL, her husband
SARAH, a very attractive Jewish woman in her early 70s, also retired
MORT, her husband
(The scene: The shoreline of South Miami Beach, somewhere north of Lincoln Road. The two couples are sitting on colorful beach towels, facing the ocean. There's a light breeze. The order of the characters from stage right to left is Mort, Sarah, Samuel, Minnah. As the curtain opens, we find the two couples laughing at one of Sarah's quips. Mort and Samuel continue laughing as Sarah takes a celebratory sip from her Bloody Mary. She wipes her lips with her index finger, then resumes her laughter.)
MINNAH: (Archly; a little too loudly.) Well, you know, they say everything is relative.
(The laughter ends abruptly as Mort, Sarah, and Samuel turn to glare at Minnah. For a few moments, you hear only the lapping of the waves. Curtain.)
