King David
Photographed October 2002.
Washington, DC.
Editor's note: I met David in Lafayette Park, near the White House. He had just completed a bicycle trip that had taken him through several states. The signs he carried with him on his bicyle, and which he displayed in the Park, criticized prominent political figures like Bill Clinton and Al Gore, and laid out a progressive social agenda (e.g., free housing for the elderly, jobs and housing for the homeless). His signs also provided some hints about his origins and the forces that compelled him to take to the road.
He spoke very freely about his philosophy, which I couldn't always follow. He was clearly displeased with the protestors who had gathered in front of the White House to criticize Bush's policies.
