The cicadas that overtook Washington DC in May 2004 had been living underground for 17 years, sucking on the roots of deciduous trees. After a few days, they were everywhere. At night you could hear them rustling in the bushes and trees. If your speakers are on, you're hearing the sound that male cicadas make during the day, when they're most active.
