Frequent boldnewlook.com visitor Jonathan Mason of Los Angeles offers these suggestions for Ephemerist art one can do on an airplane.
Sculpture. Save three or four packs of pretzel snacks. Use a little clay—be sure to pack it!—to stick the pretzels to the seat back in front of you, or to one of the armrests. As a courtesy to the airplane crew, clean up after yourself when you're done.
Found object. Claim some lavatory fixture as an objet trouvé (that's a French word). Label it.
Air sculpture. If you have a section of the airplane all to yourself, close, open, or redirect the air vents to create a subtle air sculpture.
Happening. If you're with a party of two or more people, pass a note instructing each of them to order a "pizlet" from the flight attendant. (Be sure later to reward the flight attendant for his/her trouble.)
Conceptual art. Take your pulse every 10 minutes during the flight and record the data in a table or graph. Leave this next to the crossword puzzle in the in-flight magazine.
Don't forget to photograph or otherwise record your artwork.
Send us your airplane Ephemerisms.
